A working writer mom July 2022 | @azaaadavis #author #authorlife #writermom #workingmom #authorupdates

July 12, 2022

Hi Readers,

This is a biannual check in.

I wanted to take a moment to reach out to my readers, friends, fans, and supporters. I know that I have not done much to entertain you in the past year. I also know that it is important for any up and coming artist, author, or small business owner to be consistent. I stumbled in 2020, and it’s been hard to find a good rhythm ever since.

One of the major changes in my life came with the birth of my second child in 2019. She had a different personality and temperament. My old writing schedule, and predictable moments of quiet time vanished. Raising two little ones is so different from raise a single child – it’s harder.

During the utter insanity that the pandemic created, my stay-at-home workload doubled.

Then, my husband and I bought a house in 2021. Packing, moving, unpacking, settling in, and adjusting our routines took time.

Then, I decided that I wanted to work outside of the home. There were drawbacks and benefits to this decision. At the time, it was the right decision for me, and my family. The additional income, time outside of my house, interacting with the world, adding to my purpose in life, and reestablishing a sense of self were all vitally important things that I was starting to miss.

Camping Summer 2022

Now, here we are in the summer of 2022, and I have become a full-time working mom.

My children are healthy, happy and in daycare. A lot of my new income goes towards child care expenses. And yet, it’s been a good change for all of us. My husband remains caring and supportive, as I figure out what I need and how to reach my dreams.

Having two incomes is phenomenal, and knowing that I have money to pay for the expense of being an independent author is thrilling. Book marketing is expensive!

However… Where is the time? Where is the energy? Each evening, I seem to be lacking one or the other during the few hours between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. when I could be pouring myself into my writing career. Now, I sleep when I want to sleep, knowing that one or both of my children will need me at some point overnight. Now, I sleep knowing that I need to wake up at 6:00 a.m. each morning.

It’s been tricky coming up with a new writing schedule and, to be honest, I don’t have a firm one in place yet. But I can admit that there are moments when I can crack open my laptop, or use my cell phone, to jot down story ideas, iron out story outlines, and type away one scene at a time.

I have accomplished so many of the goals I set for myself this year. I am confident that my goal to pick up the pen and start writing again will be accomplished too. While I’ve continued to write on and off for the last two years, it is consistency that I am after.

It is consistency that you, my readers, deserve.

So while I give myself time and compassion to get it together, I also want to push myself to continue my pursuit of becoming a successful hybrid author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance featuring women of color.

Thank you for your continued interest and support. I know that I may have lost your attention, and it’s understandable. I hope that with new short stories, published books, and fun social media content, I can regain your attention and readership.

  1. Consistency is an ideal that never takes real life into account. I know when everything gets too hectic the first thing to go is my blogging and then my writing. Congrats on all the new and exciting things that are going on!
