Who is Kendra Young? | #BTVS #Kendra #Buffy #vampireslayer

March 2023

Hi Readers,

Today, I’d like to talk about my inspiration for Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter.

Who is Kendra Young? A teen vampire slayer that comes to Buffy’s rescue in season two of the hit TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Kendra dies in battle. She dies saving innocent lives and ensuring other heroes win the war against evil. This tough Caribbean American character with brown skin, a heavy accent, and sassy for days was the main inspiration for Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter.

I wondered…

  • What if Kendra didn’t die prematurely?
  • What if she was the main character?
  • What motivates Kendra and guides her strong moral compass?
  • What if she were brought back to life?

Then, I wrote the book I wanted to read.

This Time (book one in the Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter book series) took a year for me to write. I was pregnant at the time. Growing a baby and writing a novel, surprisingly, has a lot of paraelles. I switched from first-person to third-person narration. The back story had to find more seamless places for it to appear in the story instead of an info dump in chapter one. Names changed. Ages changed. Motivations changed. And the ending… That wasn’t clearly defined until months later during draft two.

I’ve learned so much about novel writing, independent publishing, and engaging my ideal readers. Thank you for joining me on my writing journey to become a successful fantasy author able to support my family. 💖

Best Wishes,
Azaaa Davis
